Adivasis Protest Against Real Estate Threats in Adilabad
Adivasis residing in huts on government land in Komaram Bheem Colony staged a dharna in front of the Adilabad Collectorate on Tuesday. The protest was organized under the banner of Thudum Debba, demanding action against real estate businessmen who have allegedly been threatening them to vacate their houses.
The protesters urged the police to book the accused under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and arrest them for allegedly abusing and intimidating Adivasi families. They have been living on government land in Survey No. 72 of Komaram Bheem Colony in Bhattisavargoan gram panchayat for several years.
Adivasi leaders alleged that real estate businessmen, including Kallambhuma Reddy, Thippanarayana, David, Suresh Agarwal, Mallesh, and a prominent advocate, have been frequently visiting the colony in vehicles and verbally abusing Adivasi men and women. The harassment is particularly severe at night when residents step out for nature’s call, often being subjected to derogatory remarks about their tribe.
Thudum Debba State working president Godam Ganesh appealed to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to intervene and ensure the issuance of pattas for house sites in Komaram Bheem Colony. He also sought the provision of basic amenities for the Adivasi families living there, emphasizing the need for a secure and dignified life for the community.
The Adivasi community in Komaram Bheem Colony has been facing increasing pressure from real estate developers who are eyeing the valuable land. The lack of legal ownership and the constant threat of displacement have left the Adivasis in a state of fear and uncertainty. The protest highlights the need for the government to take immediate action to protect the rights of the Adivasi community and provide them with the necessary support to live in peace and dignity.
The incident has sparked a broader discussion on land rights and the protection of indigenous communities in India. Adivasis have historically faced marginalization and exploitation, and the current situation in Adilabad is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges they face. The community hopes that their protest will draw attention to their plight and lead to concrete actions from the authorities.
The government's response to this protest will be crucial in determining the future of the Adivasi families in Komaram Bheem Colony. It is hoped that the authorities will take a proactive stance in addressing the grievances of the community and ensuring that their rights are upheld.
