ASCI Reports Surge in Misleading Ads: Online Betting and Real Estate Top Violators

The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) has flagged a sharp rise in misleading advertisements across digital and traditional media platforms. From online betting to real estate and even social media promotions, the report indicates that a large number of ads are violating advertising norms and misleading consumers.

According to ASCI’s 2024-25 report, the council received 9,599 complaints during the period. Out of 7,199 advertisements investigated, a staggering 98% were found violating ASCI’s code. The online betting sector emerged as the biggest violator, accounting for 43% of all complaints. The real estate sector followed, with 24.9% of ads found to be misleading.

A total of 3,081 ads were linked to illegal betting platforms, including 318 promotions by social media influencers. Additionally, 233 ads promoted fake medicines or treatments, 21 were for liquor brands, and 12 belonged to forex trading apps banned by the RBI.

1,015 influencer posts were reviewed, with 98% failing to follow disclosure norms. Notably, 121 such violations were spotted on LinkedIn alone, highlighting growing concern even on professional platforms. Public complaints saw an 83.5% jump, reflecting rising consumer awareness.

94.4% of misleading ads were found on digital platforms, indicating the need for stricter digital ad monitoring. The report underscores the urgent need for tighter regulation and accountability, especially in the digital advertising space where influencers play a growing role in shaping consumer choices.

ASCI’s findings highlight the critical importance of consumer protection and the need for robust regulatory measures to ensure that advertisements are truthful and transparent. As the digital advertising landscape continues to evolve, the role of regulatory bodies like ASCI becomes increasingly crucial in maintaining trust and integrity in the market.
