Atal Setu–Mumbai–Pune Link: Steady Progress on Key Structural Work

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has reported notable progress on the Atal Setu–Mumbai–Pune Expressway connectivity corridor, with construction activities advancing across multiple stages of the project.

Out of 176 planned foundation locations, work has been completed at 143 sites, while pier construction has reached 141 locations. In addition, pier caps have been executed at 88 locations. On the superstructure front, 653 out of 830 precast girders have been completed, indicating steady movement in both structural development and construction pace.

Work is also underway at the Palaspe section, where slip roads and service roads are being widened to ensure smoother traffic flow and efficient integration with the existing expressway network. These parallel developments are aimed at improving connectivity and handling future traffic volumes.

The 7.35 km-long, six-lane elevated corridor, designed with an 11.5 m + 11.5 m configuration, will serve as a key link between Atal Setu (Sewri–Nhava Sheva) and the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. The project connects through Chirle and Palaspe, and will also provide direct access to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, which has been a major focus in regional infrastructure planning.

Once operational, the corridor is expected to provide signal-free connectivity between Mumbai and Pune, reducing travel time and improving the movement of goods and passengers. It will also support better connectivity across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Pune, strengthening economic linkages within the region.

The project is scheduled for completion by February 2027 and forms a part of MMRDA’s larger ‘Mumbai in Minutes’ initiative, which focuses on creating integrated infrastructure networks including sea bridges, expressways, and metro systems to enable faster and more predictable travel.

This corridor is also aligned with the broader Mumbai 3.0 development plan, which aims to expand growth beyond the island city. Improved connectivity to Navi Mumbai and nearby regions is expected to support urban expansion, encourage industrial activity, and generate employment opportunities. It is also likely to ease congestion in central Mumbai by distributing economic activity across emerging hubs.

MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee stated that the connector is expected to allow commuters to access the Mumbai–Pune Expressway without signal interruptions, creating a faster and more efficient travel route through Atal Setu. He added that the project is expected to benefit students, working professionals, and daily commuters by making inter-city travel more practical, supporting the idea of living in one city and working or studying in another.
