BENTELER Automotive Expands Manufacturing Footprint in Pune, Leases New Space

Mumbai: Germany’s automotive components manufacturer BENTELER Automotive has taken a significant step in expanding its manufacturing capabilities in India. The company has leased over 1.36 lakh sq ft of space at the Blackstone-backed Horizon Industrial Park in Chakan, Pune. This new lease brings the total space held by BENTELER’s India subsidiary to around 2.64 lakh sq ft, building upon its existing facility in the industrial park where it has been operating since 2021.

The company will be paying rentals of Rs 43.4 lakh per month for the newly leased space, with a 4.7% annual escalation. The new facility will be dedicated to the in-house production of tubes for torsion beams, a crucial component for rear axle beam manufacturing. Previously, these tubes were fully imported, but the new unit will enable BENTELER to produce them locally, enhancing supply-chain efficiency and providing greater control over production timelines for its India operations.

The expansion of BENTELER’s manufacturing footprint in Pune aligns with the Indian government’s push to increase domestic manufacturing under the Make in India programme. This initiative aims to reduce import dependence and strengthen local supply chains across key sectors, including automobiles and auto components. The government’s policy measures, such as production-linked incentive schemes, higher localisation norms, and incentives for domestic value addition, have encouraged global manufacturers to set up or expand their manufacturing capacities in India.

Chakan, located in Pune district, is one of India’s largest automobile manufacturing hubs, hosting production facilities for several global and domestic vehicle and auto component makers. The area has seen steady demand for industrial and manufacturing real estate, driven by capacity additions and localisation efforts across the automotive sector. The Chakan II facility is part of Horizon Industrial Parks’ portfolio, which includes 45 industrial, logistics, and in-city parks across 10 Indian markets, with a total leasable area of about 58 million sq ft.

BENTELER Automotive India is the Indian arm of the Germany-headquartered BENTELER Group, which operates in automotive technology, steel and tube production, and engineering. The group has a presence in 27 countries and supplies chassis, body, and exhaust systems, along with modules for conventional and electric vehicles. This expansion in Pune not only strengthens BENTELER’s global supply chain but also underscores the company’s commitment to supporting India’s automotive industry and contributing to its growth and development.
