BJP’s J&K Neta Alleges Discrimination Over Kashmiri Identity in Maharashtra Hotel
SRINAGAR: BJP’s media in-charge in J&K, Sajid Yousuf Shah, has alleged that he was denied accommodation at a hotel in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Saturday because of his Kashmiri identity.
An hour after checking into a hotel in Aurangabad, Shah was asked to leave due to concerns linked to his Kashmiri identity. The hotel owner, while being courteous and candid, acknowledged that the decision was unfair and hurtful but claimed he was following instructions.
For decades, countless Kashmiris have worked to strengthen the bonds between Jammu & Kashmir and the rest of India. Most Indians have welcomed Kashmiris with warmth and respect. However, incidents like this show that stereotypes and apprehensions persist.
Shah expressed his continued faith in India and its people, stating, “My faith in India and its people remains unshaken. I hope we continue moving toward a future where no citizen is judged by their region, faith, or identity, but by their character and conduct. That is the India we must strive for.”
NCP(SP) national spokesperson Anish Gawande described the incident as “incredibly unfortunate.” He emphasized that Maharashtra is built upon the ideals of Shivaji, Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Phule, and Dr. BR Ambedkar, and apologized for the treatment Shah received as a guest in the state. Gawande urged the chief minister to intervene in the matter.
The incident has sparked discussions on social media and among political circles, highlighting the need for greater awareness and sensitivity towards the diverse identities within India. It serves as a reminder of the work still needed to create a more inclusive society where everyone is treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their background.
