Congress Alleges BMC Favors Builder in Worli Land Deal
Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad has raised serious allegations against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) regarding the proposed allotment of a prime plot in Worli to a favored builder. Gaikwad claims that the BMC is planning to auction the plot for the establishment of a five-star hotel at a significantly undervalued price, causing substantial financial losses to the municipal corporation.
Do not allot the prime Worli plot for a five-star hotel and stop the auction process immediately,” Gaikwad demanded in a letter addressed to the municipal commissioner and the mayor. She has urged the authorities to halt the auction process to prevent what she believes is a blatant misuse of public resources.
When contacted, an official from the concerned department at the BMC did not respond to the allegations or provide any comments on the matter.
Gaikwad accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “selling Mumbai” and disposing of prime plots since gaining control of the municipality. She specifically highlighted a 5,166 square metre plot in a key location in Worli, which is proposed to be given to a favored builder for Rs 455 crore. According to Gaikwad, this price is far below the market value, causing significant financial losses to the municipal corporation.
The Congress leader alleged that the BMC would receive only Rs 455 crore after auctioning the Worli plot and about 1,300 square meters of space for a testing laboratory. In exchange, the developer will be permitted to construct a five-star hotel. Gaikwad claims that the terms of this deal appear to favor specific builders, allowing them to earn huge profits while the municipal corporation incurs losses.
“There has been a scam worth crores in the Worli land deal. The Congress strongly opposes the unplanned auction of prime BMC properties,” Gaikwad emphasized, reiterating her demand that the auction process be halted immediately. She called for a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure transparency and accountability in the allocation of public land.
The controversy surrounding the Worli land deal highlights the ongoing tensions between political parties and the challenges in managing Mumbai's prime real estate. The city's real estate market is highly competitive, and any perceived favoritism in land allocation can spark significant public outcry and political debates.
The Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) is the administrative body responsible for the civic and infrastructure needs of the city of Mumbai. It is one of the largest municipal governing bodies in the world, managing various aspects of urban development, public health, and social welfare. The BMC's decisions on land allocation and development projects are crucial for the city's growth and sustainability.
The allegations raised by Gaikwad have sparked a broader discussion on the need for transparency and fairness in the allocation of public land. The Congress party's strong opposition to the deal underscores the importance of public scrutiny and accountability in such high-stakes transactions.
