Controversial Christmas Event in Arambol Draws Ire from Local Groups
The ‘Tales of Kamasutra & Christmas Celebration’ scheduled in Arambol, Goa from December 25 to 28, 2025, has ignited strong public controversy. Organised by the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh Foundation, the event is advertised as a blend of meditation with themes from the Kamasutra, sparking outrage among local NGOs and citizens.
Several groups allege that it promotes sexual activities and commercial sexual exploitation under the guise of a spiritual gathering, tarnishing Goa’s family-friendly and religious image during Christmas. NGOs such as Arz and Bailancho Ekvott have urged police to investigate the legitimacy and intentions of the organisers. The controversy extends to the tourism sector with warnings that such events harm Goa’s reputation and promote sex tourism.
Organisers, led by Manjit Singh of the Osho Ludhiana Meditation Society, insist the event is purely meditative and denies any association with open sexual conduct, citing previous similar events held peacefully in Goa. Singh emphasized that the event aims to explore the spiritual aspects of the Kamasutra and promote a deeper understanding of meditation practices.
Police have confirmed inquiries are ongoing while the Goa Women’s Forum has demanded urgent intervention, including filing an FIR and a full probe into the event’s terms, organisers, fees, and venue. The forum’s spokesperson, Dr. Rita Viegas, stated, 'We are deeply concerned about the potential exploitation and the negative impact on the social and cultural fabric of our community.'
The controversy has also drawn attention to the broader issues of real estate speculation and the commercialization of spiritual practices in Goa. Critics argue that such events contribute to the gentrification and loss of traditional values in the region. Local residents and business owners have expressed their dissatisfaction, fearing that the event could deter genuine tourists and harm the local economy.
Despite the backlash, the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh Foundation remains committed to the event, stating that they have all the necessary permits and have adhered to local regulations. They have invited concerned parties to engage in a dialogue to address their concerns and ensure a transparent and respectful event.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the authorities will handle the situation and whether the event will go ahead as planned. The incident highlights the delicate balance between cultural sensitivity and the promotion of tourism in a region known for its rich heritage and family-friendly environment.
