Cracking Down: Thane Takes Action Against Violations in Yeoor Eco-Sensitive Zone
Thane: In a significant move to protect the Yeoor eco-sensitive zone, the Thane Municipal Corporation has taken strong action against various violations. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Prashant Kadam shared that 188 individuals have been issued notices, and cases have been registered against 18 persons for bursting firecrackers and using loudspeakers in the protected area.
Kadam provided this update during a review meeting chaired by Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao. The meeting focused on the enforcement efforts to curb illegal construction, noise, and light pollution in the Yeoor zone. Following complaints from the Air Force and local residents, the authorities have restricted the use of high-powered lights, loudspeakers, and fireworks in the area.
Rao emphasized that nine illegal turf clubs and commercial units recently identified in the zone are being demolished. Additionally, bungalow owners have been directed to avoid loud music and bright lighting after dusk. To prevent further unauthorized construction, Rao announced that no construction material will be allowed into Yeoor without prior verification from the municipal town planning department. Vehicle and material details must also be logged at forest department check-posts.
The commissioner also instructed his anti-encroachment teams to clear all unauthorized structures with assistance from the town planning and property tax department. Cases will be filed against commercial units operating without environmental clearances or valid licenses, Rao stated. This comprehensive approach aims to restore and preserve the ecological balance in the Yeoor zone.
Environment activist Rohit Joshi proposed the formation of a high-level coordination committee led by the Additional Municipal Commissioner. The committee would comprise officials from the civic body, forest department, police, Air Force, FDA, MSEDCL, and local NGOs. This collaborative effort is expected to enhance the effectiveness of the enforcement measures and ensure long-term protection of the Yeoor eco-sensitive zone.
