Daughter of Haji Mastan Appeals to PM Modi and Home Minister for Justice in Decades-Old Abuse and Property Dispute
Mumbai: Haseen Mastan Mirza, who claims to be the daughter of the late Mumbai underworld don Haji Mastan, has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking justice in a long-running case involving allegations of abuse, forced marriage, and the unlawful takeover of her property.
Mirza alleges that in 1996, while still a minor, she was compelled to marry her maternal uncle’s son. She claims she was subjected to repeated abuse, that her identity was misused to seize her property, and that the man had been married eight times before. She has also alleged attempts on her life and says the trauma drove her to attempt suicide on three occasions.
Speaking to ANI, Ms Mirza said she had written to both Modi and Shah to highlight what she described as serious crimes committed against her, including child marriage and sexual abuse. She argued that stricter laws and faster justice were needed to deter such offences. Her appeal follows a video posted on Instagram last week in which she again sought the intervention of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, saying she had waited years without receiving justice.
“I want the person who has done so much crime, has raped a child, left her to die... Even the police were asking, 'What were you doing then?' Today I am an adult, and no one is supporting me; back then, I was a kid. When I was thrown out of the house, no one supported me,” she said.
She said she and her mother were subjected to intense pressure to agree to the marriage. Isolated from the rest of her family, she claimed she was unaware of her father’s death at the time and only learned of it two years later. Mirza praised the government’s decision to criminalize instant triple talaq, describing it as a positive reform, but said religious laws were still being misused and called for tougher legal measures to protect women and children.
The case centers on allegations of rape, attempted murder, and property theft against the man she says she was forced to marry. Mirza said she received little support, either at the time of the alleged abuse or later as an adult pursuing the case. She also appealed to the public and the media not to focus on her father’s past, stressing that the alleged crimes occurred after his death and were unrelated to his life.
Haji Mastan, born in Tamil Nadu, rose to prominence as a major underworld figure in Mumbai, with interests in real estate and maritime smuggling. He was known as a deal-maker and was associated with several prominent figures in the city, including individuals from the film industry. Mirza hopes her public appeal will bring renewed attention to her case and lead to legal protection and accountability.
