Debunking the Myth: Indian Real Estate Firm Prestige Group Unrelated to Hong Kong Fire

On November 26, 2025, a devastating fire broke out at Wang Fuk Court in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district, claiming the lives of at least 151 people. The blaze, which engulfed seven out of eight phases of the complex, was finally extinguished by the morning of November 28, after more than 40 hours of intense firefighting efforts by over 2,000 firefighters. This incident marked Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in a decade.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, an X account named RTSG News made a false claim that the firm responsible for the maintenance of the ill-fated project was Prestige Construction, owned by an Indian national, Irfan Razack. The account, which claims to be “the only source that reports RealNewsOnly,” posted two images: one allegedly of Irfan Razack and the other of the complex in flames. The post described the situation as a “Report” and claimed that Prestige Construction, the company responsible for the maintenance, was owned by an Indian billionaire entrepreneur from Bangalore.

RTSG News, according to its website, is an international research collective that aims to bring reality to a world of fake news. The site emphasizes its commitment to independence, reliability, and editorial discipline, stating that all articles and posts are rigorously fact-checked and researched by their writers and editors.

However, a closer examination reveals that the claim is baseless. Irfan Razack, whose photo was attached to the post, is indeed the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Prestige Group, a real estate company based in Bangalore, India. The firm linked to the Wang Fuk Court project, however, is Prestige Constructions, a Hong Kong-based engineering company contracted to perform maintenance work on the building. These are two entirely different and unrelated companies.

It is also important to note that according to Reuters, the police arrested two directors and an engineering consultant of Prestige Constructions under suspicion of manslaughter for using unsafe materials. This further underscores the lack of connection between the Indian Prestige Group and the Hong Kong-based Prestige Constructions.

To summarize, Irfan Razack, the CMD of Prestige Group based in Bangalore, India, has no relation to the firm Prestige Constructions, which was responsible for the maintenance work on Wang Fuk Court. The claim that an Indian-owned firm was involved in the building’s upkeep is entirely false and baseless.
