From Mumbai Slums to Dubai Billionaire: The Inspiring Journey of Rizwan Sajan
Even amid the ultra-luxurious world of Netflix’s 'Desi Bling,' filled with private jets, designer wardrobes, pet goats, and boasts of owning 40 kilos of gold, one cast member stands far above the rest in terms of sheer wealth. Rizwan Sajan has emerged as the richest personality on Netflix’s latest reality show.
While the series showcases the extravagant lifestyles and lavish spending habits of the South Asian elite living abroad, it is Rizwan Sajan’s remarkable rags-to-riches story that has especially captured viewers’ attention. From growing up in the slums of Mumbai to building one of the most successful Indian-origin business empires in the UAE, his journey has become one of the standout narratives of the show.
Rizwan Sajan, one of the breakout personalities from Netflix’s 'Desi Bling,' is the 62-year-old founder and chairman of the Dubai-based Danube Group. Born in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, Sajan is today counted among the richest Indian-origin businessmen in the UAE, with an estimated net worth of around $2.5 billion. According to Forbes, Danube Group recorded an annual turnover of nearly $1.3 billion in 2019 and has continued expanding steadily since then.
Founded by Sajan in 1993, the company has grown into a diversified conglomerate with businesses spanning real estate, home décor, building materials, residential housing, architectural cladding, healthcare, hospitality, and media. Headquartered in Dubai, the group now operates across more than 10 countries worldwide.
However, Sajan’s story is far removed from inherited wealth or privilege. Unlike many ultra-rich entrepreneurs, he came from extremely humble beginnings. Born and raised in the slums of Ghatkopar in Mumbai, Rizwan Sajan reportedly dropped out of school at a young age to support his family financially. As per Forbes India, he took up odd jobs during childhood, including selling milk and books on the streets just to make ends meet.
Reflecting on his early struggles, Sajan once shared on Instagram, “I started working at the age of 14.” His fortunes gradually began changing after he secured a job as a salesman in Kuwait, where his talent for sales and business quickly earned him recognition. However, the Gulf War forced him to leave Kuwait and return to India, temporarily disrupting his progress.
But the setback proved only temporary. In the early 1990s, Sajan moved to Dubai and launched a small trading business from scratch. That modest venture, founded in 1993, eventually evolved into the Danube Group, now regarded as one of the Middle East’s largest and most successful business conglomerates.
Sajan’s success is a testament to his resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. His journey from the slums of Mumbai to becoming a billionaire in Dubai is an inspiring tale that continues to motivate many aspiring entrepreneurs and underprivileged individuals around the world.
