Ganga Expressway Launch on April 29: Boosting Uttar Pradesh's Connectivity

The Ganga Expressway will be inaugurated on April 29, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to launch the project from Hardoi district. The project is expected to strengthen east-west connectivity in Uttar Pradesh and improve access between key economic and administrative centres across the state.

The 594-km expressway will connect Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in the eastern region. It will pass through 12 districts, including Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, and Pratapgarh. The corridor is expected to improve connectivity for several towns and rural areas along the route and provide smoother movement for both passenger and freight traffic.

The project has been developed at an estimated cost of around INR 36,000 crore. It has been designed as a six-lane access-controlled expressway, with provision to expand to eight lanes in the future depending on traffic demand. Once operational, travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj is expected to come down from around 12–13 hours to nearly 6–7 hours, making long-distance road travel more efficient.

Construction of the expressway was initiated after the foundation stone was laid in 2021. The project was executed in multiple packages to speed up progress, with land acquisition and statutory clearances completed before large-scale construction activity began. Work progressed simultaneously across different stretches to ensure timely completion.

The expressway includes several built-in safety and operational features. These include smart traffic management systems, speed monitoring mechanisms, rumble strips, and dedicated trauma centres for emergency response. A 3.5-km airstrip has also been developed in Shahjahanpur, which can be used for emergency landings by the Indian Air Force as well as for disaster response situations.

Officials have indicated that the expressway is expected to support economic activity by improving logistics efficiency and reducing transportation costs. Faster connectivity is likely to benefit industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, and warehousing, especially in districts located along the corridor. Land values in some of these areas have already shown movement due to improved infrastructure prospects.

The project forms part of Uttar Pradesh’s broader strategy to expand its expressway network. The state has already developed multiple high-speed corridors, and the addition of the Ganga Expressway is expected to further strengthen connectivity between key regions while improving integration with existing road infrastructure.
