Dole wins Nielsen breakthrough innovation award

International information company Nielsen has chosen a Dole Fresh Vegetables salad line from 3,500 consumer products for its Breakthrough Innovation Award for 2016.

The Dole Chopped Salad Kits, launched in 2013, mark the first win in the category for a produce brand, the company said in a release.

The awards are now in their eighth year.

2016 Nielsen Breakthrough Innovation Award winners satisfied three requirements: a distinctive consumer product that delivered a new value proposition to the market in 2014; a minimum of US$ 50 million in first-year U.S. sales; and a demonstrated ability to endure the market by achieving 90 percent of first-year sales during its second year.

“Dole is beyond honored that the DOLE Chopped Salad Kit line is one of only 92 U.S. products to receive this award since its inception in 2008 – and the first-ever winner in the produce industry,” said Dole Fresh Vegetables VP of marketing, CarrieAnn Arias.

“DOLE Chopped Salad Kits were launched in 2013 as the next wave in salad innovation: a taste-first chopped salad experience featuring layers of flavor, texture, color and crunch in every bite.

“The success of the initial line led to the introduction of two additional Chopped Salad varieties in 2015 to meet consumer demand.”

She said the fact Nielsen had reviewed 20,000 U.S. product lines over eight years and found Dole’s salad kits demonstrated innovation and success by improving the country’s daily eating habits was extremely fulfilling for everyone at the company.

The seven kits include varieties such as Bacon and Bleu, BBQ Ranch, Chipotle & Cheddar, Pomegranate, Poppy Seed, Sesame Asian and Sunflower Crunch, and are part of a larger line of packaged salad blends and kits.

“The fact that Nielsen reviewed 20,000 U.S. product launches over eight years and found Dole and Dole Chopped Salad Kits as demonstrating breakout innovation and success and improving America’s daily routines of eating is extremely fulfilling for everyone at Dole,” she said

The seven Dole Chopped Salad Kits — with varieties that include Bacon and Bleu, BBQ Ranch, Chipotle & Cheddar, Pomegranate, Poppy Seed, Sesame Asian and Sunflower Crunch — are part of a larger line of packaged salad blends and kits, including conventional and family-size, sold under the Dole brand.

The Southeast Produce Council will honor Terry Vorhees at the end of February with its highest honor, its Lifetime Achievement Award. The award will be presented posthumously at Southern Exposure, the council’s conference and trade show, scheduled for Feb. 26-28, 2015, at the Caribe Royale All-Suite Hotel & Convention Center in Orlando, FL

VorheesVorhees

Vorhees, one of the founders of the council and its first executive director, died July 30 at the age of 64. This will be the first time that the award will be presented posthumously. Many members of the Vorhees family will be on hand to accept the award, according to David Sherrod, who succeeded Vorhees as the council’s executive director.

Joe McGee, founder of the L&M Family of Companies, received the first Lifetime Achievement Award back in 2008, followed by Ferdinand S. Duda of A. Duda & Sons Inc. in 2009; Peter Pero III of Pero Family Farms in 2010; Tommy Irvin, a former commissioner of agriculture in Georgia, in 2011; Reggie Griffin, retired from The Kroger Co., in 2012; Paul J. DiMare of DiMare Fresh in 2013; and Tom Page, retired from Supervalu Inc. and a former president of the council, in 2014.

“There was no question this year that Terry would receive the award,” Sherrod told The Produce News Nov. 10. “He was the only choice for all of us. This is for everything Terry has meant to the council and for what he has meant to each and every one of us here.”

The award, which is co-sponsored by the council and The Produce News, will be presented during the keynote luncheon and general session Saturday, Feb. 28.

MMG Citrus Innovation Award given to ‘Mandarossa’ clementine

MMG Citrus Innovation Award given to ‘Mandarossa’ clementine

Innovation pays… in the fresh produce industry too. Especially when it creates value all the way down the production chain, from grower to consumer.

This was demonstrated yet again on 16 October, when the ‘MMG Citrus Innovation Award’ was given to the ‘Mandarossa’ clementine produced by COA srl “Calice d’oro”, the important Sicilian company specialized in citrus production.

This prize is awarded every year by the Fresca Group – a leading UK fresh fruit and vegetable giant – to specific products from its best suppliers. The ceremony took place on 16 October during the Fruit Attraction event in Madrid. A jury made up of four directors of the UK company decided to award the prize to this clementine variety, introduced with success to the British Marks & Spencer supermarket chain last year. In doing so the judges praised the extremely innovative nature of the ‘Mandarossa’, the result of a long selection process that led to the birth of a new product whose outstandingly attractive taste, total lack of pips and bright red pulp made it hugely popular with UK consumers.

Mandarossa is the trade name of Mandared, a hybrid between the clementine and the Tarocco blood orange, developed in Acireale in 1985. It made its debut in the UK in the first four month of 2014, when it appeared on the shelves of the Marks & Spencer retail chain. A jewel of Italian fruit-growing expertise which has quickly conquered a large following in the UK.

“This prize brings us great pleasure. It rewards the efforts our company has made to innovate, in order to benefit our client companies and our end consumers” – comments Rocco Lardaruccio, chief executive of COA Srl “Calice d’oro”. “The prize received in Madrid is a recognition of our work ethos, our commitment and our ability to draw strength from the particular features of our home territory. Features which are strongly appreciated in Northern European countries in particular, where top sector specialists recognize and reward the quality of the produce created by Sicilian skill and efficiency”, he concludes.
