New consumer pack released by Owyhee Produce

A new mesh sleeve consumer pack designed to minimize onion skin flaking is now available from Owyhee Produce of Nyssa, OR.

In describing the Sleeve Pack, which holds onions in a single column, Owyhee General Manager Shay Myers said the benefits are immediately apparent.

“When it comes to keeping your produce display clean and organized, onions can be one of the hardest to maintain,” Myers said. “Each and every movement causes parts of the flaky onion skin to fall off onto your display, and it’s a problem not solely found in the individual onion display but also underneath the typical three-pound mesh bags.

Sleeve-pack-“At Owyhee Produce, we weren’t content with staying with the familiar and looked for a better product to provide for our retailers and, furthermore, their consumers,” he said. “We’re very excited to announce a new innovative onion packaging option called the Sleeve Pack, which still uses a mesh bag but one that hugs the onions in a side-by-side display that minimizes movement and maximizes cleanliness and organization.”

Myers said retailers will find the Sleeve Pack, which holds two pounds of onions all the same size, makes displaying onions easier with its stackability and its assurance of consistency.

Consumers will also find the Sleeve Pack more convenient, he said.

“The Sleeve Pack offers your consumers great benefits at home… with easy storage and cleanliness,” Myers said. In addition, the slim bag can be knotted for later use, a convenience that the open mesh bags can’t offer.

“The Sleeve Pack is innovative, it looks great, and I anticipate it driving sales,” Myers said. “But the bottom line for me is to get the absolute best product out to my customers. I want to give them an added value to the products they sell to their customers so that they can stand out.”

With a fully operational packaging system in place, Owyhee Produce is looking forward to sending The Sleeve Pack out with the start of 2015.

Over 50,000 attendees get a peek at a sci-fi future at Pack Expo International in Chicago

CHICAGO — With over 1.2 million square feet of exhibition space and more than 2,400 exhibitors, the Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies Pack Expo International 2014 drew record-breaking crowds of more than 50,000 for the Nov. 2-5 exhibition, here.

With next-level technology on ample display, the floor looked as much like the set of a futuristic science fiction movie as a trade show.PE-3Bob Harandi of Nestle/Dreyer’s and Jeff Grossman of International Paper.

Packing, filling, weighing and processing machines buzzed and whirred non-stop around the floor, while life-size servo motor powered robots battled it out in a Plexiglas boxing ring in one booth and attendees took turns behind the wheel of a hyper-realistic F1 racing simulator in another.

“You’ve got to be careful in that simulator,” said Robert Jenkins of Church and Dwight, owners of the Arm & Hammer brand. “If you spin out, you’ve got mud on your windshield and it’s there for the rest of the race.”

Amid the hubbub, attendees jockeyed for space in 143 educational sessions — and vied for prized tickets to a command performance by comedian and former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno at a reception benefiting the K9s for Warriors project and sponsored by International Paper, Bemis, DuPont and ProMach.

PMMI Director of Member Communications Kate Achelpohl noted that the packaging industry grew by 6 percent from 2012 to 2013 and should make a similar leap this year.

“The Pack Expo shows are always tremendous, but the International show is just mind-boggling,” said Don Reggio of Norcross, GA-based RockTenn, which showed off its packaging capabilities and machinery in a booth that dwarfed the company’s display at PMA Fresh Summit just two weeks earlier. “Even better, it’s always a great return on investment.”

The next PMMI show will be the debut of Pack Expo East, scheduled for Feb. 16–18, 2015, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. Expo Pack Guadalajara 2015 will be held March 10-12, 2015, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Expo Pack México 2015 will take place June 16-19 in Mexico City, Mexico, and Pack Expo Las Vegas is set for Sept. 28-20.

Marco pack house system increases productivity for Windset Farms in California

Marco pack house system increases productivity for Windset Farms in California

Marco’s YCM yield control equipment is bringing important productivity improvements for Windset Farms at their expansive fresh produce operation in Santa Maria, California.

Installed in 2013, the multi-line system, designed to simplify and deskill the manual packing process, is helping Windset increase throughput of their extensive range of pre-packed tomatoes. The installation features Marco’s ingenious ‘one light–one fruit’ operator display, designed to significantly increase line speeds and reduce overpack/giveaway.

Each light segment on the visual light display represents a single fruit. The YCM terminals can be pre-programmed to store different types and weights of tomato, making pack line changes very simple and rapid. As pre-packed tomatoes travel down the packing line, they are placed on the scale and then Windset operators are visually prompted to ‘add’ or ‘take out’ individual tomatoes to ensure pack weight compliance.

Windset’s Chief Operating Officer John Newell has been very impressed with the Marco solution: “Marco’s original improvement predictions at first seemed very optimistic, but we have certainly not been disappointed. The improvements in productivity and reductions in giveaway since the installation last September are dramatic. We also have gained additional benefits in terms of increased pack house visibility and we can now measure individual operator performance so that targeted training can be given where necessary.”

Marco are exhibiting at the upcoming Fruit Attraction exhibition in Madrid (October 15th-17th), stand 3E12C.
