Dole Chopped Salad Kits selected for Nielsen Breakthrough Innovation Award

Nielsen has honored Dole Fresh Vegetables for transformational innovation and for continually bringing improvements to essential day-to-day experiences and rituals.

The produce company and its line of Dole Chopped Salad Kits, launched in 2013, received a 2016 U.S. Nielsen Breakthrough Innovation Award,  selected for distinctiveness, relevance and endurance from close to 3,500 consumer products introduced to the market that year. It is the first time a produce brand has won the award in the eight-year history of the competition.DOLE Chopped SunflowerCrunch FRONT

2016 Nielsen Breakthrough Innovation Award winners satisfied three requirements: a distinctive consumer product that delivered a new value proposition to the market in 2014; a minimum of $ 50 million in first-year U.S. sales; and a demonstrated ability to endure the market by achieving 90 percent of first-year sales during its second year.

“Dole is beyond honored that the Dole Chopped Salad Kit line is one of only 92 U.S. products to receive this award since its inception in 2008 — and the first-ever winner in the produce industry,” CarrieAnn Arias, vice president of marketing for Dole Fresh Vegetables, said in a press release. “Dole Chopped Salad Kits were launched in 2013 as the next wave in salad innovation: a taste-first chopped salad experience featuring layers of flavor, texture, color and crunch in every bite. The success of the initial line led to the introduction of two additional Chopped Salad varieties in 2015 to meet consumer demand.

“The fact that Nielsen reviewed 20,000 U.S. product launches over eight years and found Dole and Dole Chopped Salad Kits as demonstrating breakout innovation and success and improving America’s daily routines of eating is extremely fulfilling for everyone at Dole,” she said

The seven Dole Chopped Salad Kits — with varieties that include Bacon and Bleu, BBQ Ranch, Chipotle & Cheddar, Pomegranate, Poppy Seed, Sesame Asian and Sunflower Crunch — are part of a larger line of packaged salad blends and kits, including conventional and family-size, sold under the Dole brand.

Caesar Salad Kits Recalled for Potential Listeria Contamination

APPA Fine Foods of Corona, CA, is recalling approximately 92,657 pounds of fully cooked chicken Caesar salad kit products due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The salad kits were shipped nationwide to one bulk warehouse chain for retail sale in its in-store cafés. (APPA Fine Foods produced the kits used by the bulk warehouse chain.) The following products are subject to recall:

  • 11-oz. clear plastic containers and 6.5-lb. boxes labeled, “APPA Fine Foods/Sam’s Club Daily Chef CHICKEN CAESAR SALAD KIT” with case codes 141851, 141922, 141951, 141991, 142021, 142201 or 142131 with use by dates of 8/14/14, 8/21/14, 8/27/14, 9/1/14, 9/3/14 or 9/17/14. The kits were produced on July 4, July 11, July 14, July 18, July 21, July 25, Aug. 1 and Aug. 8, 2014.

Box labels bear the establishment number “P-21030” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Officials with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development informed FSIS they received two confirmed positive Listeria monocytogenes results from retail product purchased at one of the bulk warehouse chain locations. The bulk warehouse chain then sampled intact components of the salad kits. Only the chicken came up positive for Listeria.

FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria can cause Listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected.

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract.

In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections can occur in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell their health care provider about eating the contaminated food.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

Consumers with questions regarding the recall can contact Thom Rindt of APPA Fine Foods  at 951-547-8111.

60 Minnesota E. coli Cases Linked to Potato Salad Served at Reservation Events

At least 60 people fell ill with E. coli O157:H7 in July at Minnesota’s Fond du Lac Reservation, apparently after consuming potato salad likely made with a contaminated ingredient, according to the local news outlet Pine Journal.

The infections occurred after three separate events on the reservation, all catered by the same vendor on July 11 and 16. Potato salad was served at two of those events, leading investigators to believe one of the salad’s ingredients caused the outbreak.

The first illness was reported on July 17 and the last on July 20, suggesting that the outbreak is likely over. Given that several weeks have passed since the events, the chance of determining the exact food source of the infections is growing slimmer.

Food Safety News originally reported on this outbreak on July 24, when 22 cases had been confirmed.

Four patients sickened in the outbreak have retained representation from food safety law firm Marler Clark, which underwrites Food Safety News.
