Gallery: ‘Smarter’ Fresh & Easy debuts in Las Vegas

Fresh & Easy is getting “smarter” with a new-look store that made its debut in Las Vegas in late November as part of an effort by the chain’s new owners to reinvigorate the brand.

The stores, which feature totally new layouts and a new merchandise mix, are being touted in print, electronic and digital ads as a “smarter” store.  Eight of the 19 Las Vegas stores have already been upgraded, with the balance due to be remodeled by early January, the company said.

The 15,000-square-foot stores still utilize 10,000 square feet of selling space, but that space has been completely transformed, with lower shelving, more wood fixtures for a warmer look, more wall décor and a broader offering of healthy and natural foods, plus a wide selection of fresh offerings for in-store dining or takeout.

Fresh & Easy testing new-concept store in Las Vegas

Fresh & Easy said Thursday it plans to expand its single-store test of a new go-to-market strategy this weekend at seven more Las Vegas stores — part of an ongoing effort to reinvigorate its brand.

The first new-look store opened two weeks ago in Las Vegas, which the company said it is using as a test market. Fresh & Easy, based in El Segundo, Calif., operates 167 stores in California, Arizona and Nevada.

It said it expects to convert most of the 17 Fresh & Easy stores in Las Vegas to the new concept by the end of the year.

Asked about a wider rollout, a Fresh & Easy spokesman told SN, “Right now we are using Las Vegas as a test market to implement new ideas and concepts. It’s too early to speculate what the results from this launch will be, but we are excited to bring our customers there something completely unique and new.”

The spokesman said Fresh & Easy will refer to the remodeled stores as “smarter markets” in its promotional campaign.

According to the company, the new format incorporates “an innovative take on creating modern convenience,” including the following:

• A “fresh to go” hot food bar, featuring made-to-order sandwiches, fire-oven pizzas and hot soups.

• A revamped product selection, including a broader assortment of fresh foods; a coffee, espresso and tea bar; a smoothie machine; a self-serve beverage bar featuring draft sodas, freshly pressed orange juice and kombucha; a homeopathic and natural-remedies section, with a health kiosk; and a natural baby selection.

• A more open feel to the stores, with lower fixtures, as part of a new layout.

“We’ve evolved Fresh & Easy by constantly innovating to improve our stores and products,” Mike Evans, vice president, marketing, said. “The company has been reinvigorated, and we are now using Las Vegas as a test market to implement even more new ideas and concepts.

“As with all the changes we have made, we are going to constantly evaluate and fine-tune our ideas.”

Kroger’s Food 4 Less to exit Las Vegas market

Kroger Co. said it will eliminate the Food 4 Less banner in the Las Vegas marketplace early in 2015 by closing eight Food 4 Less stores and converting six others to the Smith’s Food & Drug Store banner.

Kroger already operates 30 Smith’s stores in the area.

The company said it decided to streamline its operations in Las Vegas “for a number of reasons,” which it did not enumerate. Bryan Kaltenbach, president of Food 4 Less, the Kroger warehouse division based in Southern California, said joining the two store groups “will help us to better serve the community.”

The company said all Food 4 Less associates will be offered the opportunity to join the Smith’s team.

In what the company said was an unrelated move, the Ralphs division of Kroger plans to close four Southern California stores on Nov. 8. A company spokeswoman said all are underperforming.

The stores are spread across the region — in Long Beach, Newhall, Oceanside and Santa Clarita. Earlier in the year Ralphs closed six Southern California locations, leaving it with 226 prior to this week’s additional closings.

New Attempt to Open Las Vegas to Raw Milk Sales

The seven-member Clark County Commission is the target of a new lobbying campaign to open the Las Vegas market to the sale of milk that has not been pasteurized. Raw milk sales in Nevada are currently limited to counties with local raw milk commissions, and Clark County has not established one.

Earlier this year, the Nevada Legislature overwhelming voted to allow raw milk sales statewide from any county with a raw milk commission, but Gov. Brian Sandoval vetoed the bill. It would have permitted raw milk produced in neighboring Nye County, which has a raw milk commission, to be sold in Clark County.

According to a report in the Las Vegas Sun, there is a large underground market for raw milk in “Sin City,” with inventory being shipped in from Utah, Arizona and California for brisk sales conducted in out-of-the-way residential areas. And, the demand is enough that raw milk advocates are not giving up on making it all legal.

They want Clark County commissioners to establish a raw dairy commission. But gaining at least four of those seven votes may be harder than it was to get 57 of Nevada’s 63 state lawmakers. Clark County health officials are against it, and even Commissioner Tom Collins, a rancher favorable toward raw milk, does not “want to see tourists not come here for fear our milk isn’t good.”

For the present, that means that the only legal sales of raw milk to be found in Nevada are in Nye County.
