Maharashtra Cabinet Approves Compressed Biogas Policy and UGC Pay for Model Colleges

Mumbai, Apr 22 (PTI) The Maharashtra cabinet has approved the state's Compressed Biogas (CBG) Policy, 2026, aimed at scientific waste management and curbing greenhouse gas emissions. This policy is a significant step towards sustainable development and environmental conservation.

Under the policy, a coordination committee will be set up in every district to execute biogas projects through public-private partnerships on a hybrid annuity model. This approach ensures that the projects are financially viable and technically sound, promoting both economic and environmental benefits.

An outlay of Rs 500 crore has been earmarked for CBG projects in the current financial year, as per an official release. This substantial investment demonstrates the state's commitment to advancing renewable energy and reducing its carbon footprint.

In another decision taken at the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the cabinet approved the allotment of 42.55 hectares of land to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) for an IT park at Nagewadi in Satara district. This initiative is expected to boost the local economy and create numerous job opportunities.

The cabinet also decided that teachers in seven model colleges will be paid basic salaries in line with the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines. This move is designed to attract and retain high-quality educators, thereby enhancing the standard of education in these institutions. Teachers will also be eligible for additional marks in recruitments undertaken by the Higher and Technical Education Department, further incentivizing their professional development.

A proposal to restructure the premium payable for the conversion of land tenure from Occupant Class-2 to Class-1, in accordance with the state's land holding norms, was also approved at the meeting. This restructuring aims to streamline the land conversion process and make it more accessible to eligible individuals and entities.

Overall, these decisions reflect the Maharashtra government's commitment to sustainable development, economic growth, and educational advancement. By implementing these policies, the state is taking significant steps towards a more prosperous and environmentally friendly future.
