Mangrove Conservation Takes Center Stage with 'Leave a Mark' Campaign
Airoli: To mark World Environment Day, an innovative awareness campaign titled “Leave a Mark” was organized at Mindspace Business Park in Airoli by Project Mumbai and Mindspace Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT), with support from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).
The initiative aimed to highlight the importance of Navi Mumbai’s mangrove ecosystem and the harmful impact of plastic pollution. More than 2,400 citizens, employees, and representatives from various organizations participated in the event.
As part of the campaign, participants created a large 32 ft x 48 ft artwork depicting mangroves and waterways using green and blue footprints. The symbolic installation served as a visual reminder of the need to protect coastal ecosystems.
The drive also resulted in the collection of over 2,400 plastic bottles and containers, diverting approximately 40 kg of plastic waste for recycling. Based on scientific estimates, the effort is expected to help reduce plastic-related stress on nearly 280 mangrove trees in the Thane Creek region.
The collected plastic has been handed over to Project Mumbai and will be recycled into benches for municipal school students. Environment-friendly and recycled materials were used throughout the campaign.
NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of public participation in environmental conservation. Mindspace REIT CEO and MD Ramesh Nair and Project Mumbai Founder Shishir Joshi highlighted the need for collective action and responsible plastic management.
Organizers also announced future activities, including mangrove clean-up drives, community gardens made from recycled plastic, and environmental awareness programmes in schools, colleges, and housing societies.
