MHADA Allocates ₹10,585 Crore to Construct 13,012 Affordable Homes in 2026-27
The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has unveiled ambitious plans to construct 13,012 affordable homes across its regional boards, including Mumbai, Pune, Konkan, Nashik, Amravati, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Nagpur. The authority has allocated ₹10,585 crore for this construction in the ongoing financial year, as of April 10.
MHADA's revised budget for the financial year 2025-26 and the budget for the year 2026-27 have been recently approved. The revised budget for 2025-26 stands at ₹12,399 crore, while the budget for 2026-27 has been set at ₹17,430.73 crore. This substantial allocation reflects the government's commitment to addressing the housing needs of various income groups in the state.
According to MHADA, the city-wise construction target for 2026-27 is as follows: 2,538 flats are proposed for construction in Mumbai, with a provision of ₹6,747 crore allocated for construction expenditure. Additionally, ₹2,711 crore has been allocated for work to be carried out by the Mumbai Slum Improvement Board using MLA/government funds. Another ₹661 crore has been earmarked for repairing cessed buildings under the Mumbai Building Repair and Reconstruction Board.
Since its establishment in 1977, MHADA has been a key player in the housing sector of Maharashtra. As of November 2025, the authority has constructed 5.27 lakh dwelling units in the state, according to the state government’s Economic Survey 2025–26. This significant contribution underscores MHADA's role in providing affordable housing solutions to millions of residents across Maharashtra.
The allocation of funds and the construction targets set for 2026-27 are expected to have a profound impact on the housing landscape of Maharashtra. These efforts are particularly crucial in addressing the growing demand for affordable housing in urban areas, where rising property prices and limited availability of affordable homes have become major challenges for many families.
The construction of these homes is not only expected to provide shelter to those in need but also to stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities in the construction and related sectors. MHADA's initiatives are a step towards achieving the goal of 'Housing for All' and ensuring that every citizen has access to a safe and affordable home.
The detailed budget and construction plans are a testament to the government's commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens. As the project progresses, it is hoped that these homes will not only meet the immediate housing needs but also contribute to the long-term development and well-being of the communities they serve.
