Mumbai Crash: 22-Year-Old Driver's Porsche Collides with WEH Divider
A high-speed accident involving a Porsche and a BMW on the Western Express Highway (WEH) in Mumbai has left the 22-year-old Porsche driver, Neo Sonks, with severe injuries. The incident occurred on the southbound side near Jogeshwari early Thursday morning. Both vehicles were carrying a group of friends heading towards Bandra to meet another friend.
Sonks, who was driving the Porsche, sustained serious injuries to both legs and was rushed to a nearby hospital. The other passengers in both cars sustained minor injuries. The accident happened between 2:15 AM and 2:30 AM when Sonks reportedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid a pothole on the WEH. The Jogeshwari police have registered a case against him, clarifying that no pedestrians were injured and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
An oil spill from the Porsche caused a two-wheeler to skid and lose control. The police promptly called the fire brigade to remove the oil. Footage from the scene shows the aftermath of the crash, with the blue Porsche 718 Boxster model, bearing registration number DN 09 Q 1777, sustaining extensive damage on its right side. One of the car's headlights was blinking faintly, while the other was smashed into pieces.
According to the police, two persons, including Sonks, were seated in the Porsche, while three people, including the driver, were traveling in the BMW trailing it. The police pointed out that although the cars were trailing each other, they were not racing. However, eyewitnesses reported that the high-end vehicles appeared to be racing at the time of the mishap.
Sonks, a law student, resides in Mira Road West, and the Porsche belongs to his family. His father has passed away, and his mother is involved in the real estate business. Siddharth Shukla, a Versova resident, was driving the BMW, which also belongs to his family. The police have registered a case against Sonks under sections 125(B) (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and section 184 (dangerous driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the need for better maintenance of the WEH. The police have called for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and regular inspections to identify and address road hazards. The community has also expressed the need for increased awareness and education on the dangers of speeding and reckless driving.
