Mumbai's Local Trains Get a Major Boost: 100 New Rakes to Replace Old Ones

Mumbai's suburban railway system is set for a significant upgrade with the Central and Western Railways (CR and WR) jointly requesting 100 new local train rakes from the railway ministry. This move is aimed at replacing ageing trains and supporting increased services under ongoing Mumbai transport projects.

Many of the current suburban trains have completed their working life, making it crucial to introduce new rakes to maintain safe, reliable, and efficient services for the millions of daily commuters across the CR and WR networks. The new rakes are essential to keep up with the growing demand and to ensure that the system can handle the increased number of passengers.

The proposed new rakes will support additional services created by ongoing upgrades. These upgrades include new lines, corridors, and added routes, which are increasing train frequency across Mumbai. The expansion of the railway network is part of a broader plan to improve public transportation and reduce congestion on the roads.

Several large-scale rail projects are currently underway across the CR and WR, covering a total of 400.53 km. These projects include the construction of new corridors, additional lines, and infrastructure upgrades. The investments in these projects are estimated at ₹18,365 crore and are expected to significantly enhance the suburban train services in Mumbai.

To further improve the comfort of long suburban routes, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has floated tenders for 238 air-conditioned (AC) rakes. These modern trains are part of the capacity enhancement plan but are not expected to enter service before 2030. In the interim, CR and WR require additional rakes to meet the rising passenger demand and maintain efficiency across suburban services.

Central Railway currently operates 1,820 services with a fleet of 138 standard 12-car rakes, 80 12-car AC rakes, 22 15-car rakes, and 36 additional rakes. These rakes are used on the Main, Harbour, Trans-Harbour, and Port lines. Western Railway, on the other hand, runs 1,406 services with 1,074 12-car, 121 12-car AC, and 211 15-car rakes. The planned expansion of 15-car trains will require a significant increase in suburban rolling stock to handle the growing number of passengers.

Both CR and WR are planning to run more 15-car trains to meet the growing passenger numbers. This expansion will require additional rakes to maintain service reliability and handle peak-hour demand. The introduction of these new rakes will not only improve the overall commuting experience but also contribute to the sustainable development of Mumbai's public transportation system.
