NAREDCO Proposes September 17 as 'Right to Housing Day' to Mark PM Modi's 75th Birthday

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to mark his 75th birthday on September 17, the real estate sector’s apex body, the National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO), has written to him proposing that the day be commemorated as “Right to Housing Day.”

The letter, written by Niranjan Hiranandani, Chairman of NAREDCO India, hails the government’s housing and tax reforms, calling them transformative for both the economy and society. It acknowledges the Prime Minister’s efforts in steering schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), under which more than 4 crore homes have been built, offering security and dignity to families across the country.

At the same time, the broader mission of “Housing for All” — first envisioned as part of India’s development roadmap — remains an unfinished agenda. Millions still aspire to affordable and adequate housing, and challenges relating to land availability, urban infrastructure, and financial viability continue to slow progress. Industry observers often note that while significant strides have been made, universal housing is still some distance away.

Against this backdrop, NAREDCO’s letter strikes a tone of gratitude and support, framing its proposal as a gesture of thanks on the Prime Minister’s landmark birthday. “Under your extraordinary leadership, India’s real estate sector has undergone a historic transformation,” Hiranandani wrote, highlighting that reforms such as RERA and GST have brought transparency, accountability, and customer focus to the industry.

The council said dedicating September 17 as Right to Housing Day would be a fitting tribute to PM Modi’s vision of an inclusive and empowered India. NAREDCO also pledged to work in partnership with the government to help achieve the larger mission, stating: “We solemnly pledge to champion this noble mission, working shoulder to shoulder with your government to ensure that every Indian has access to adequate and dignified housing.”

If accepted, the proposal would mark the first national observance dedicated to housing rights — a symbolic recognition of both the government’s efforts so far and the work still needed to make Housing for All a reality.
