NSE, BSE, and MCX Trading Status on Maharashtra Day: Market Holiday Details
On May 1, 2026, domestic stock exchanges such as the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will be closed for trading due to Maharashtra Day. This holiday is observed to commemorate the formation of Maharashtra state. The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), the country’s largest non-agricultural commodity exchange, will also be closed during the morning session but will resume trading in the evening session between 5 pm and 11:30 pm.
Meanwhile, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), the largest agricultural bourse, will be closed in both sessions. Trading on NCDEX will resume on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
Many global exchanges are also shut on May 1, 2026, in observance of International Labour Day. In Asia, stock markets in China, Singapore, and Hong Kong will be closed. Similarly, European markets such as those in France, Germany, and Spain will also be closed. However, stock markets in the UK and US will remain open and will resume trading at their usual times.
The next market holiday in India will fall on May 28, 2026, on account of Bakri Eid. The second half of the year includes several significant holidays. Muharram will be observed on June 26, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, and Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. Dussehra will be celebrated on October 20, followed by Diwali Balipratipada on November 10 and Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24. The final trading holiday of the year will be Christmas on December 25.
A small surprise in the holiday calendar is the absence of a Diwali holiday, as it falls on a weekend (Sunday). However, Muhurat Trading will be conducted on Sunday, November 8, 2026, with the specific timings to be notified later. The exchanges may alter any of the above holidays, and a separate circular will be issued in advance if any changes are made.
In the holiday calendar released last year, the exchanges initially announced 15 trading holidays but later added January 15 as an additional holiday due to the Mumbai BMC elections. After this, the domestic markets were closed on January 26 for Republic Day. Indian markets observed holidays on three occasions in March - first for Holi (March 3) and then for Shri Ram Navami (March 26) and Shri Mahavir Jayanti (March 31). In April, the markets were closed on the 3rd and 14th for Good Friday and Dr. Baba Bhim Rao Ambedkar Jayanti holidays.
