The change effectively halves weekly seat availability between Pune and Thailand’s capital at a time when outbound leisure and business travel traditionally gathers pace.
Travel intermediaries tracking bookings say current return fares from Pune to Bangkok hover in the low ₹20,000 range. With capacity tightening, they anticipate fares could climb sharply through April to June, particularly as advanced bookings pick up for school holidays and corporate travel.

That shift, while rational for consumers, underscores Pune’s missed opportunity to retain outbound travel spend within its own aviation ecosystem. Urban planners argue that air connectivity is not merely a tourism metric but an economic multiplier. Direct routes support convention traffic, export-oriented industries, and regional investment flows. For a city positioning itself as a knowledge and innovation centre, constrained global access can dampen competitiveness.
There are also environmental trade-offs. Diverting passengers to Mumbai increases surface transport emissions and road congestion along the inter-city corridor. Strengthening direct air links from secondary metros can, in the long term, reduce unnecessary ground travel and support more balanced regional growth.
As discussions around a proposed greenfield international airport continue, experts emphasise that incremental upgrades to terminal, navigational, and ramp infrastructure at the existing facility remain critical.
