Pune Builder Falls Victim to Piped Gas Scam, Loses Rs 2.55 Lakhs
Pune: Online fraudsters, masquerading as officials of a piped gas company, have swindled a city builder of Rs 2.55 lakhs by falsely claiming that the builder had not paid the pending dues for the piped gas. According to the Cantonment police, the incident occurred on May 8, and the case was registered on Sunday after verifying the complaint.
The builder’s office is equipped with a gas connection, which is primarily used to prepare tea and other snacks for the office staff. The complainant, who is an administrative officer of the construction company and a resident of Yevalewadi, was the target of the scam.
The fraud began when the admin officer received a message from the fraudsters, stating that the gas bill had not been paid. Upon clicking the link provided in the message, a form appeared, prompting her to fill in her details to pay the pending dues for the piped gas. Unbeknownst to her, the link led to a remote access software controlled by the fraudsters.
The admin officer, believing the message to be genuine, used the company’s debit card to complete the payment process. However, the form was a trap, and the fraudsters gained control of the debit card, siphoning off Rs 2.55 lakhs. The scam highlights the vulnerability of small and medium-sized businesses to cyber fraud, especially when dealing with essential services like piped gas.
The Cantonment police have launched an investigation into the incident and are urging other businesses and individuals to remain vigilant against such scams. They advise verifying any communication related to bills or payments through official channels before taking any action.
Cybersecurity experts recommend several steps to prevent such frauds. These include using multi-factor authentication, regularly updating security software, and being cautious about clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources. Additionally, businesses should train their employees to recognize and report suspicious activities promptly.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of cybersecurity in the real estate and construction sectors, where financial transactions are frequent and often involve large sums of money. Companies must prioritize security measures to protect their assets and maintain the trust of their clients and employees.
