Pune: Construction Begins on Double-Decker Flyover and Metro Line on Nagar Road
Nagar Road, 9th February 2026: Pune has entered a new phase in its urban transport transformation, with work now underway on a 4.7-kilometre double-decker flyover integrated with a Metro rail corridor along the busy Nagar Road stretch. The project is designed to tackle long-standing congestion while introducing a high-capacity public transport solution along one of the city’s most critical routes.
The corridor, being built by MahaMetro, will link Ramwadi and Tuljabhavani Nagar as part of Phase II of the Pune Metro expansion. Nagar Road serves as a vital connector to major IT hubs, business districts, residential areas, and Pune International Airport, making it one of the most heavily used roads in the city.
The structure will feature a six-lane flyover on the lower tier, with Metro tracks running above it, creating a vertically layered transport system. According to Pune Metro Managing Director Atul Gadgil, the engineering design is particularly complex because Metro stations will be constructed above the flyover deck.
The elevated corridor will run for 4.7 km and also include a spur at Viman Nagar to improve connectivity toward the airport zone and nearby commercial establishments. Officials added that the flyover will maintain a minimum vertical clearance of 5.5 metres to ensure safe vehicular movement while supporting Metro operations overhead.
In anticipation of future traffic growth, the flyover design allows for expansion from six to eight lanes if required.
Four elevated Metro stations will come up on this stretch: - Viman Nagar - Somnath Nagar - Kharadi Bypass - Tuljabhavani Nagar
Construction will proceed in stages, covering foundation works, concourse girders, platform structures, and deck slabs. Engineers are sequencing the work to ensure structural stability while reducing disruption to daily commuters.
Authorities have stated that the project will be executed without disturbing existing roads, railway crossings, or essential utility lines. Traffic diversions and safety systems are being planned to manage vehicle movement during construction.
The double-decker project forms part of a wider effort to strengthen Pune’s mass transit network. The Union government has already approved extensions of the Vanaz–Ramwadi Metro line toward Chandni Chowk and Wagholi, improving east–west travel across the city.
Simultaneously, work is progressing on a 1.1-km extension of the Vanaz corridor up to Chandni Chowk, where new stations and depot-related infrastructure are planned.
At present, Pune Metro operates services on the Vanaz–Ramwadi and Pimpri-Chinchwad–Swargate corridors. Once the ongoing and proposed extensions are completed, officials expect a substantial reduction in road congestion alongside faster, more sustainable commuting options.
Urban planners describe the Nagar Road project as a forward-looking model for land-scarce cities, demonstrating how vertical integration of road and rail infrastructure can expand capacity without requiring additional road space.
