Pune: MahaMetro Launches Tender for Ramwadi–Wagholi Metro Extension

Pune, 2nd February 2026: Commuters in Pune’s eastern suburbs can look forward to long-term relief from worsening traffic congestion as MahaMetro has formally launched the tender process for the Ramwadi–Wagholi Metro extension under Phase II of the Pune Metro project. The 11.63-km elevated corridor, planned along Ahilyanagar Road, will enhance connectivity to major residential and commercial hubs and provide quicker access to Pune International Airport.

MahaMetro has set a completion target of three and a half years from the time the tendering and contract formalities are finalized.

The proposed Metro line will be developed in coordination with the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) as part of an integrated double-decker transport corridor. While MSIDC will construct a six-lane elevated road, MahaMetro will build the Metro viaduct above it along the same alignment.

The corridor will feature 11 elevated Metro stations at Viman Nagar, Somnath Nagar, Kharadi Bypass, Tuljabhavani Nagar, Ubalenagar, Upper Kharadi Road, Wagheshwar Temple, Wagholi, Siddharth Nagar, Bakori Phata, and Vitthalwadi.

The project will be executed in phases. The first phase will cover a 4.8-km stretch from Ramwadi to Tuljabhavani Nagar and include four stations along with access ramps. MahaMetro has already floated tenders for this phase, with bids to be submitted by March 4.

The second phase will extend the elevated corridor further towards Wagholi, completing the planned stretch.

Long-Awaited Solution for Congestion

The Pune–Ahilyanagar Road corridor, encompassing Viman Nagar, Kharadi, and Wagholi, is among the most traffic-congested routes in the city. Daily commuters travelling from eastern suburbs toward central Pune, as well as air travellers heading to the airport, often face prolonged delays due to slow-moving traffic.

The Metro extension responds to a long-pending demand to strengthen mass transit connectivity beyond Ramwadi. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project, estimated at ₹3,624 crore, has already received approvals from both the state and central governments.

Coordination Cleared After Delays

Officials said the project’s progress had earlier slowed due to the enforcement of the model code of conduct during local body elections. Meanwhile, a separate six-lane elevated road project on the same corridor had been proposed under MSIDC. Following state cabinet approval and inter-agency coordination, both projects are now moving forward in tandem.

The Metro extension is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, particularly employees working in Kharadi’s IT parks and nearby commercial districts. By providing a high-capacity rapid transit system, the corridor is projected to reduce reliance on private vehicles and significantly cut travel time in one of Pune’s fastest-growing zones.

“Once operational, this extension will significantly ease congestion and improve connectivity in the eastern suburbs,” said Chandrashekhar Tambwekar, Public Relations Officer, MahaMetro.
