Pune-Mumbai Expressway's 'Missing Link' Tunnel Work Completed, Bridge Still Under Construction
Pune, 6th June 2025: The tunnel section of the highly anticipated ‘Missing Link’ on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway has been completed, marking a major milestone in the project. However, the full opening of the new route will be delayed by at least five more months, as construction of the adjoining cable-stayed bridge in the Tiger Valley section remains unfinished.
Officials from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) have attributed the delay to adverse weather conditions, including persistent rain and strong winds in the valley area. While the main superstructure of the bridge is in place, the crucial task of installing support cables is still underway. The bridge is being constructed at a height of nearly 132 feet, and challenging weather has significantly slowed progress.
Originally scheduled for completion by August 25, the project deadline has now been extended to November 25. The ‘Missing Link’ features two key components: a 13-kilometre tunnel—now fully built—and the cable-stayed bridge over Tiger Valley, which is the final segment pending completion.
Once operational, the new route is expected to ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time between Pune and Mumbai by approximately 25 minutes. The project, aimed at enhancing connectivity and improving safety along the expressway, carries an estimated cost of ₹6,695 crore.
The completion of the tunnel section is a significant achievement, as it involved navigating complex geological conditions and ensuring the safety of workers.
