Pune: Rohit Questions Police Notices to Hostels, PGs for Job Aspirants

2026-10-11 · GeoSquare News Scraper

Maharashtra legislator Rohit has questioned the need for police notices being issued to hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations that house job aspirants in Pune. He argued that such notices create unnecessary harassment for property owners and students, and could disrupt the city's rental housing market.

What's the issue?

The police have been sending notices to hostels and PGs as part of a tenant verification drive. Rohit, however, pointed out that these establishments are already registered and regulated under local municipal rules. He asked why they are being singled out, especially when many young migrants rely on such shared housing for affordable accommodation in Pune.

Impact on rental housing

Pune is a major hub for students and young professionals, with a thriving market for co-living spaces and PG accommodations. Industry watchers fear that such regulatory pressure may make property owners hesitant to rent to job aspirants, reducing supply and pushing up rents. This could hurt both tenants and the broader real estate ecosystem, which has been seeing steady demand for shared housing.

Rohit has urged the administration to hold consultations with stakeholders and issue clear guidelines, rather than resorting to blanket notices. He emphasised that a balanced approach is needed to ensure safety without stifling the growth of Pune's rental housing segment.
