Pune Unveils Plans for New Velodrome Ahead of Grand Challenge Tour 2026
Pune is set to bolster its sporting infrastructure with a proposed new velodrome at Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi. This initiative, valued at ₹35 crore, is being advanced ahead of the Pune Grand Challenge Tour-2026, an international cycling race scheduled for January. The project underscores an ambition to promote professional cycling in Maharashtra and establish a lasting sporting legacy for the entire Pune district, marking a significant step for the city’s athletic aspirations.
The velodrome proposal received immediate support during a high-level review meeting recently held in Pune, where senior government officials confirmed that funds for the project will be sanctioned swiftly. The facility is specifically designed to offer state-of-the-art training infrastructure to aspiring cyclists, particularly those inspired by the upcoming global event. Developed to international specifications, the venue will enable local and national athletes to train year-round, not only serving future competitive needs but also actively fostering a vibrant cycling culture throughout the region, creating new opportunities for sports enthusiasts.
Complementing this infrastructure push is the Pune Grand Challenge Tour-2026, set to be the first event of its kind in India. Modeled on prestigious global races such as the Tour de France, this multi-stage race will span over 600 kilometers, traversing diverse urban, rural, and hilly terrains across Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and various surrounding areas. Officials from the Cycling Federation of India and district administration have already conducted joint inspections to ensure the route meets international race standards, encompassing necessary road repairs, route cleanliness, and robust medical support. The event has also been proposed to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) for official recognition, with expectations that it will serve as a qualifying event for the next Olympic Games.
The race is poised to attract cyclists from approximately 50 countries, including 40 Indian riders, fostering global visibility for Pune in sports and tourism. Plans are in motion to broadcast the event live in at least 25 countries, amplifying its reach and impact. Furthermore, officials are actively pushing to declare a day during the race as National Cycling Day, aiming to further promote and popularize the sport across India. This combined effort promises a transformative period for cycling in the nation.
