Pune Witnesses Record-Breaking Summer Rainfall; Maharashtra Reports Unusually High Pre-Monsoon Showers

Pune, 27th May 2025: Pune district has recorded an extraordinary spell of rainfall this summer, registering a staggering 1,419% above normal rainfall from March 1 to May 27, 2025. According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the district received 250.7 mm of actual rainfall, compared to the seasonal normal of 16.5 mm.

The figures are even more dramatic for May alone. From May 1 to May 27, Pune district experienced 245 mm of actual rainfall, against the normal average of 10.3 mm, marking a massive 2,279% departure from the usual. This makes it the wettest pre-monsoon May.

Weather experts attribute this unusual pattern to sudden atmospheric changes in early May. While the first week of the month saw intense heat, increased humidity in subsequent days led to frequent cloud formation and rain showers. Several areas in Pune also reported thunderstorms and heavy rains, a rare occurrence for this time of the year.

The IMD has forecast continued rainfall in the coming days, with moderate to heavy showers likely for the next 48 hours, followed by light to moderate rain thereafter.

This unseasonal weather is not limited to Pune alone. Cumulative data for the entire state of Maharashtra from March 1 to May 27 shows that the state received 150.2 mm of actual rainfall, against the normal 22.2 mm, resulting in a 577% excess. For May alone, the state recorded 135.2 mm of actual rainfall, which is 1,200% above normal, highlighting a significant shift in pre-monsoon weather patterns across Maharashtra.

Meteorologists are closely monitoring these developments, as such anomalies may have both short-term and long-term implications for agriculture, water management, and urban infrastructure. The unseasonal rainfall has the potential to affect crop planting schedules, water reservoir levels, and urban flood management systems, requiring proactive measures from local authorities and the community.
