Pune's Metro Line 3: Transforming Commutes from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar
The long-awaited 23-km IT corridor, known as Pune Metro Line 3, is in its final stages of construction. Connecting the bustling IT hub of Hinjewadi to the central district of Shivajinagar, this project aims to improve urban mobility for thousands of tech professionals and residents.
Currently, commuters traveling between Hinjewadi and the city center face heavy traffic jams, often spending up to two hours on the road. Once operational, the Metro will cover this entire distance in just 30 to 35 minutes, offering a smooth and reliable alternative to road travel.
The Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar line will have 23 strategically located elevated stations. Key stops include Megapolis Circle, Quadron Business Park, Dohler, Infosys Phase II, Wipro Phase II, and Shivaji Nagar. This wide coverage ensures that major IT parks and residential areas are within easy reach of the transit system.
One of the most important aspects of Line 3 is its integration with the existing Metro network. Passengers will be able to switch between the Hinjewadi line and the Pimpri-Chinchwad-Swargate (Line 1) or Vanaz-Ramwadi (Line 2) routes at the Civil Court interchange, making travel easier across the city.
This project is being executed by Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model under Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL), a special-purpose vehicle formed by Tata Group’s TRIL Urban Transport and Siemens. This collaboration aims to bring world-class infrastructure to Pune’s public transport.
Recent updates suggest a full rollout is now planned before June. The focus remains on completing the complex viaducts and ensuring that the electrical and signaling systems are thoroughly tested before the public launch.
Hinjewadi’s Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park is home to hundreds of companies, but the lack of fast transit has led to chronic congestion. The Metro is expected to remove thousands of private vehicles from the road, reducing carbon emissions and improving the air quality of the IT corridor.
Looking beyond the current 23-km stretch, there are active plans to improve connectivity toward Lohegaon Airport. Connecting the Metro with the airport and the Kalyani Nagar station will allow travelers to move from the IT park to the flight terminal without any problem.
The 'Metro Effect' is already visible along the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar corridor. Real estate demand has grown in areas like Balewadi, Baner, and Maan, as developers and investors rely on the improved accessibility provided by the upcoming rail line.
