Thane Station India's Busiest With 9.3 Crore Riders

Thane railway station has emerged as India's busiest, handling about 9.3 crore passengers in a year, with Kalyan ranking a close second. The two nodes on Mumbai's suburban network carry commuter volumes that most metro systems worldwide would envy.
From mill town to megacity
Thane's rise has been driven by rapid industrialisation followed by a sustained real estate boom that reshaped the city into a major residential and commercial hub. Proximity to Mumbai, comparatively affordable land parcels and steady infrastructure spending have kept apartment launches flowing across the Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli belts.
Why ridership matters for property buyers
Station footfall is a practical proxy for housing demand. Consistently high commuter numbers point to a deep end-user pool rather than speculative buying — a healthy signal for projects within a 3–5 km radius of Thane, Kalyan and Thane's emerging micro-markets such as Ghodbunder Road, Mumbra and Titwala.
Ridership of this scale also strengthens the case for transit-oriented development (TOD) and station-area commercial projects, where office, retail and residential densities cluster around rail exits.
Connectivity upgrades under way
Ongoing work on suburban corridor extensions, additional fast services and interchange facilities aims to decongest these stations. For investors, the pattern is familiar: improved rail capacity has historically preceded capital-value appreciation along the corresponding residential stretches.
Buyers should, however, weigh station congestion and last-mile connectivity alongside project specifications, as peak-hour crowding remains a day-to-day reality at both terminals.
