Why Cristiano Ronaldo and Nicole Kidman Chose Cascais for Their Homes: Inside Portugal's Luxury Real Estate Haven
Cascais, a charming coastal town near Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, has a rich history as a summer escape for the country’s royal family and European monarchs during World War II. Today, it’s reinventing itself as a luxury real estate haven. Known as the “Portuguese Riviera” along with nearby Estoril and Sintra, Cascais is drawing wealthy buyers from across the globe who seek grand historic homes and ultra-modern condos. This town is also home to some of the biggest celebrities in the world.
“We’re comparing it to Monaco,” says Marta Durao, sales director at Engel & Volkers Cascais Group, highlighting the transformation fueled by celebrities and star architects, according to a Mansion Global report.
In 2024, Portuguese soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo settled into a bespoke mansion in Quinta da Marinha, reportedly valued at €20 million. Last year, Nicole Kidman was seen browsing homes in Cascais, a region that has also welcomed notable visitors such as Jennifer Lopez and actress Monica Bellucci, the report added.
Prime Cascais neighbourhoods like Gandarinha, Quinta da Marinha, and Estoril have some of the highest real estate values in Portugal, according to the report. Detached homes in Gandarinha command around €25,000 per square meter, while luxury condos range between €8,000 to €13,000 per square meter.
Frederico Mendoca of Cluttons Portugal reveals in the report that villa prices can soar up to €32 million, making it one of the most expensive listings in the country. New developments, such as the Foster + Partners-designed Atoll residences launching in 2028, showcase the high-end market’s growing sophistication.
Cascais isn’t just about impressive properties; it offers a wealth of amenities, from six golf courses and equestrian clubs to a marina and top-tier restaurants. Its cultural richness includes a Museum Quarter and extensive parks, while convenient transport links allow a quick 30-minute train ride to Lisbon.
International schools like IPS Cascais British International School cater to the influx of young families relocating here. Additionally, with global celebrities joining the mix, Cascais has firmly established itself as a discreet yet thriving playground for the global elite.
