15 Arrested, 500 Booked in Pune's Yavat Over 'Objectionable' WhatsApp Post
Real Estate Pune:Communal tension erupted in Yavat village in Daund tehsil, Pune, where several groups of individuals vandalized and set ablaze properties over an objectionable post on WhatsApp. The Maharashtra Police has arrested 15 people and registered FIRs against more than 500 individuals in connection with the violence.

The youth who posted the objectionable status on WhatsApp has also been arrested. According to an official, the incident led to significant communal unrest, with a large mob taking to the streets to vent their anger. They set ablaze a motorcycle and damaged a bakery, among other properties. The police had to use tear gas shells and lathi charges to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control.

Narayan Deshmukh, the senior inspector at Yavat police station, stated that 15 people have been arrested and remanded in police custody until August 6. So far, five cases have been registered in connection with the violence. Four of these cases are against more than 500 people who were allegedly involved in arson and damage to property, with over 100 individuals identified.

The targets of the violence included a motorcycle, two cars, a religious structure, and a bakery. The police responded quickly to the situation, deploying a large contingent of security personnel, including the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), in the village. Prohibitory orders under Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) section 163 and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) section 144 were imposed from Friday night to maintain law and order.

Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural) Sandeep Singh Gill stated that the preliminary probe has not indicated any planned conspiracy in the incident. However, he emphasized that no conclusions can be drawn until the inquiry is complete. 'We have registered five FIRs in connection with the incident,' Gill said, adding that the person who posted the objectionable content has lived in the village for years.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also visited the site and provided additional context. According to Pawar, the youth who allegedly uploaded the objectionable WhatsApp post hails from Nanded and works as a daily wage laborer. The post was related to an incident that occurred in Madhya Pradesh, which incited the locals to engage in vandalism and violence.

The police have reassured the community that the situation is now under control, and additional measures are being taken to prevent any further unrest. The deployment of security personnel and the imposition of prohibitory orders are expected to maintain peace and order in the region.
