BDD Chawls are tenements built between 1920 and 1940 in Mumbai, named after the Bombay Development Department. These tenements have been a critical part of the city’s affordable housing landscape but have deteriorated over time.
The vital project status streamlines the redevelopment process, providing priority access to government resources and support. It helps bypass bureaucratic hurdles and ensures the project progresses without unnecessary delays.
Approximately 300,000 residents currently living in the BDD Chawls will benefit from the redevelopment, which includes modern, multi-story buildings with essential amenities and public facilities.
The key stakeholders include the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and private developers.
The long-term benefits include improved living conditions, enhanced safety and well-being of residents, job creation, and the transformation of communities. The project also sets a precedent for similar redevelopment initiatives across the city and the country.
