BJP Refuses to Campaign for Shiv Sena’s Abdul Sattar in Sillod Amid Tensions
Real Estate Maharashtra:Tensions are brewing within the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra as the high-stakes assembly elections of 2024 approach. The local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Sillod assembly constituency, located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, has made a bold decision to not campaign for their Mahayuti ally, Shiv Sena’s Abdul Sattar. This move has raised eyebrows and highlighted the fragility of the ruling alliance.

Abdul Sattar, a seasoned politician, is running against Suresh Bankar of the Shiv Sena (UBT) in the Sillod assembly constituency. Despite being a part of the Mahayuti alliance, the BJP’s local leadership has expressed strong reservations about Sattar’s behavior and political stance.

Sillod BJP president Kamlesh Kataria has been vocal about the reasons behind this decision. He alleged that Sattar has been making threatening remarks against BJP workers and even talking about ‘finishing’ the BJP in the constituency. “We will not campaign for Sattar in the Sillod assembly constituency. Though he is the Mahayuti’s candidate, he speaks of finishing the BJP from Sillod. He threatens our workers and lodges fake complaints against them,” Kataria stated.

Kataria further claimed that Sattar openly supported the Congress candidate, Kalyan Kale, during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, which led to the defeat of former Union minister Raosaheb Danve. “The BJP’s first priority is the national interest, and in this context, Sattar is not a fit candidate,” he emphasized.

Kataria has formally communicated this decision to the state BJP leadership, including state BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. “I have sent a letter to these leaders informing them that we will not campaign for Sattar,” he added.

Abdul Sattar has had a noteworthy political journey. He won the Sillod seat in the 2009 and 2014 assembly elections on a Congress ticket. In 2019, after joining the undivided Shiv Sena, he successfully contested the election on its ticket. Following the split in Shiv Sena in 2022, Sattar aligned with the Eknath Shinde-led faction and secured a ministerial position in the Mahayuti government.

The ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra is a coalition of the Shiv Sena, BJP, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Despite the cracks emerging in the alliance, the coalition remains a significant force in the state’s political landscape.

Voting for the 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra will take place on November 20, and the results will be declared on November 23. The decision by the Sillod BJP unit to not support Sattar could have significant implications for the election outcome in the constituency and potentially for the broader alliance.
