A 37-year-old real estate agent in Mumbai was cheated of Rs 2.82 lakh by a conman posing as a sadhu. The suspect, dressed in saffron robes, distracted the agent and replaced his gold ring and gemstone with worthless items.

The conman dressed in saffron robes and carried a copper kamandalu, chanted religious verses, and blessed the agent, asking for a small donation. He then produced a paper bundle containing reddish powder and a gemstone, asking the agent to place his gold ring inside it for ‘good luck’.
The agent lost a gold ring and a gemstone, which together were valued at Rs 2.82 lakh.
The police registered a case under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and circulated the suspect's description to track him down. They are also scanning CCTV footage from the area.
The suspect is described as a dark-complexioned man, around 50 years old, with long hair, a beard, saffron clothing, a shawl, and a kamandalu.
The police advise shop-owners to be cautious during low-footfall hours, especially when approached by individuals using religious props and sleight-of-hand techniques.
