Controversy Erupts Over 'Halal Lifestyle Township' Near Mumbai
Real Estate:A proposed real estate project in Maharashtra’s Neral, nearly 100 km from Mumbai, has stirred a significant political controversy after its advertisement went viral online. The project, marketed as the “Halal Lifestyle Township,” drew widespread criticism and accusations of promoting exclusivity on religious lines. It was alleged that the project was being marketed as a residential space exclusively for a specific community.

The row erupted after former National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Priyank Kanoongo shared the video of the advertisement on his X handle and labeled it “Nation Within The Nation.” Kanoongo described the advertisement as a “poison spread” and highlighted that the township was being designed for only those of a particular religious community, with features such as prayer spaces and community gatherings within walking distance.

After the backlash, the builder has taken down the ad from their social media platforms. In the advertisement, a woman was seen wearing a hijab and describing the township as a community providing “authentic community living” with “like-minded families who share the same values.” The ad emphasized the presence of prayer spaces and community gatherings within the township.

Kanoongo shared the video on X and stated that a notice has been issued to the Maharashtra government. He emphasized the need for the government to take action against such projects that promote division and exclusivity.

All India Muslim Jamaat National President Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi criticized the use of the word “Halal” in the project, stating that it was an attempt to spread hatred in society. “By using such a name and the word Halal, an attempt is being made to send out a particular kind of message. The builders and people involved in this are not working to unite society, but rather to spread hatred and create division,” he told IANS.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Krishna Hegde questioned the motive behind the advertisement and urged the state government to order an investigation into the project. Hegde emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in such real estate ventures to ensure they do not promote religious exclusivity.

The controversy surrounding the 'Halal Lifestyle Township' highlights the ongoing tensions and sensitivities in Indian society regarding communal harmony and inclusivity. It underscores the importance of careful and responsible marketing practices, especially in the real estate sector, where such projects can have significant social implications.
