The multi-crore liquor scam in Chhattisgarh involves a large-scale fraud where corrupt officials and businessmen allegedly siphoned off funds from the excise department. The scam is estimated to have generated around Rs 2,161 crore in illegal proceeds.
Chaitanya Baghel is the son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. He is alleged to have played a key role in laundering over Rs 1,000 crore in the excise scam, with a significant portion of the funds funneled into his real estate project 'Vitthal Green'.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a 7,000-page charge-sheet against Chaitanya Baghel before a special court in Raipur. Chaitanya was arrested by the ED on July 18 at his residence in Bhilai.
Besides the real estate project 'Vitthal Green', the ED has identified other entities such as Dhillon City Mall and Dillon Drinks where the laundered funds were allegedly funneled.
The Chhattisgarh state Bureau for Investigation of Economic Offences (EOW) has also been investigating the liquor scam. They have filed a charge-sheet against 22 excise officials and a six-time Congress MLA, Kawasi Lakhma, in the case. The EOW has also sought custody of Chaitanya Baghel for further interrogation.
