Empowering Young Lives: Building Bridges from Care to Career
Real Estate:HYDERABAD, India - If you call a specialized real estate group helpline in Hyderabad to inquire about property, you will likely speak with Nandini, who will explain the available investment plans. Nandini's journey from rag picker to Tele-caller has been challenging, yet it is both inspiring and fulfilling.

Born into a challenging family situation in Bangalore, Nandini faced a difficult childhood after her father's death and her mother leaving her with her grandparents. Raised by her grandparents and later placed in Asritha Girls Homes, Nandini continued her education. She joined Care Leavers, an initiative by UNICEF and Udayan Care in Hyderabad, to continue her education, skill-building, and work to become self-independent.

The Care Leavers initiative supports young adults without parental care who have lived or are living in Child Care Institutions (CCIs) and are governed by law as children in need of care and protection until they reach the age of eighteen. Unfortunately, beyond eighteen, the childcare system does not adequately address their vulnerabilities or prepare them with further education and life skills to lead an independent life.

Since April 2021, through its partner Udayan Care, UNICEF has been supporting Care Leavers from CCIs across the state for their empowerment, upskilling, and advancing career prospects through a center based in Hyderabad. The center provides them with safe housing, legal identity, physical and mental well-being, financial awareness, employable skills to equip them for aspirational careers, and competencies to mainstream them for independent living.

Safeguarding children's rights and bringing care is the focus of the Care Leavers initiative. The approach promotes young people's rights to a life of dignity and equal opportunity. For young Asha, being forced into child labor as a maid, it was crucial to protect her rights and provide care.
