Environmental Activism Slows Real Estate Growth in Pune
Real Estate:Pune's real estate sector is experiencing significant hurdles due to persistent environmental activism and strict adherence to regulatory norms, according to Manish Kaneria, head of the environment committee of Credai.
Speaking at a real estate expo, Kaneria highlighted an increase in show cause notices from pollution control authorities, driven by complaints from activists.
'The green norms are very complex, and it is extremely difficult for developers to comply with them in their entirety.
Developers usually approach the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) with their grievances,' he explained.

MPCB officials maintained that they provide sufficient time for developers to respond to show cause notices.
'However, the board will have to take action against those who fail to rectify their irregularities,' stated an MPCB official.
This regulatory action has led to several large real estate projects being stalled, which is expected to impact the supply of new homes in the city, as noted by Bharat Agarwal, president of Naredco Pune.

Ranjit Naiknavare, president of Credai Pune, defended the developers, stating that they do follow anti-pollution rules.
'The dust primarily comes from infrastructure works such as road construction and metro projects.
Most developers are adhering to municipal norms to avoid dust pollution by using green nets for barricading and watering structures,' he said.

The real estate sector in Pune is grappling with these challenges, which are not only delaying project timelines but also increasing costs.
Developers are urging for a more balanced approach to environmental regulations that supports sustainable development while also considering the economic impact on the industry.
