Farewell to Udhayam Theatre: A Cherished Landmark of Chennai's Film History
Real Estate News:CHENNAI A once-bustling complex that was the center of excitement for fans of Rajinikanth and other Tamil cinema giants, Udhayam Theatre, is now a deserted building with empty corridors and silent ticket counters.
This iconic theatre, which has been a part of Chennai’s film history since the 1980s, closed its doors last month.
The land will soon be handed over to a real estate firm for the construction of a residential complex, marking the end of an era.

The journey of Udhayam Theatre began in the 1980s when six brothers—Narayana Pillai, Subramaniya Pillai, Karuppasamy Pillai, Paramasivam Pillai, Sundaram Pillai, and Kalyana Sundaram Pillai—moved from Tirunelveli’s Udhayathur to Chennai with the dream of starting a theatre.
Their dream came to life in 1983 with the screening of Rajinikanth’s 'Sivappu Sooriyan'.
Since then, it has been a beloved venue for the 'Thalaivar's' (Rajinikanth's) fans.
