The Fulkar Samaj is demanding a heritage tag for the Mardol jasmine (Jayo) cultivation to protect it from real estate threats and preserve the cultural identity of the region.
The Mardol jasmine is renowned for its exceptional fragrance and is an integral part of Goa’s floral heritage and the livelihood of local farmers.
The cultivators are facing threats from the real estate lobby and incidents of arson targeting their farms, which have damaged large portions of the century-old jasmine plantations.
The proposed solution is to designate the jasmine farmlands as a jayo orchard cluster, ensuring that neither the farmers nor the landowners can sell these lands, thereby preserving the traditional practice.
The heritage tag would provide a sense of security to the farmers and help preserve the unique floral heritage of Mardol, ensuring the continuation of this traditional practice for future generations.
