Haryana Advances Modern, Inclusive Urban Development Policies
In Haryana, senior administrators, urban planners, and representatives of the real estate sector have reached a consensus on the need to modernise and strengthen the Haryana Development and Urban Areas (Regulation) Act, 1975. This consensus was reached during a high-level roundtable discussion organised by the Haryana Regional Chapter of the Institute of Town Planners, India, in Panchkula.
Speaking on the occasion, Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi said continuous improvements in urban policies and regulatory frameworks are essential to keep pace with the state’s rapidly evolving urban landscape and development needs. He noted that while the 1975 Act has significantly supported planned urban development, infrastructure creation, and economic growth over the past five decades, the time has now come to take it to the next level.
Mr. Rastogi further emphasised that coordination and synergy among government institutions, planners, and industry stakeholders are crucial for ensuring balanced, inclusive, and future-ready urban development across Haryana. The roundtable discussion highlighted the need for a more integrated approach to urban planning, with a focus on sustainable development, smart cities, and community participation.
The participants discussed various challenges, including the rapid urbanisation of rural areas, the need for adequate housing, and the importance of green spaces. They also explored the role of technology in enhancing urban governance and the potential for public-private partnerships to drive innovation and efficiency in urban development.
The Haryana government’s commitment to modernising urban policies is part of a broader initiative to transform Haryana into a leader in sustainable urban development. This initiative aims to create vibrant, livable, and resilient cities that can support the state’s growing population and economic aspirations.
The roundtable concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders to collaborate closely and work towards the implementation of the new policies and frameworks. The Haryana Regional Chapter of the Institute of Town Planners, India, pledged to continue its efforts in facilitating dialogue and knowledge sharing among urban planners, policymakers, and industry leaders.
