RERA stands for Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, which is a regulatory framework introduced in 2016 to protect the interests of homebuyers and promote transparency in the real estate sector.
The main concerns of the home buyers' forum include the ineffectiveness of RERA, delays in project completions, discrepancies in project costs, and a lack of transparency from developers.
Over 50,000 complaints are pending across various states, according to the home buyers' forum.
The forum suggests stricter penalties for non-compliance by developers, a dedicated fast-track mechanism to resolve pending complaints, and the creation of a national database of defaulting developers.
The Consumer Affairs Ministry is responsible for consumer protection and can work with state-level RERA authorities to ensure effective implementation of the regulatory framework and protect the rights of homebuyers.
