Horrific Murder in Mumbai: Teacher Stabbed to Death in Crowded Local Train

MUMBAI: A new CCTV footage has surfaced showing the moment a college teacher was fatally stabbed inside a crowded Mumbai local train on Saturday evening. The footage, recorded at Malad station, shows a sudden argument on the platform before the accused pulls out a knife and attacks the victim, then flees amid the chaos. Commuters are seen rushing out of the train, horrified by the violent scene.

Police identified the victim as Alok Kumar Singh (33), who taught mathematics and statistics at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics. He was attacked while alighting from a Borivali-bound train around 6 pm. Singh was rushed to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali, where he was declared dead.

The accused, Omkar Shinde (27), a daily-wage labourer, was arrested within 12 hours from the Kurar area in Mumbai’s western suburbs. Investigators said CCTV footage from Malad station and other points along the train route helped track him down. Earlier in the day, another CCTV clip showed a man in a white shirt and blue jeans panicking and running across a foot overbridge at Malad station shortly after the stabbing, providing investigators with crucial leads.

According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the altercation escalated quickly from a minor disagreement, leading Shinde to stab Singh on platform number 1. Several passengers reportedly witnessed the assault, and their statements are being recorded as part of the investigation. Singh, who lived in Malad East with his wife, had been teaching at the junior college section of Narsee Monjee College since 2024. Colleagues described him as calm and soft-spoken, with the incident leaving the college community “in shock.”

Shinde, who works as a metal polisher, has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police are examining CCTV footage and investigating the weapon used in the attack. The swift arrest and the detailed investigation are expected to bring some solace to the victim's family and the shocked community.
