Iconic Lutyens Delhi Bungalow, Once Nehru's Residence, Sold for ₹1,100 Crore
Real Estate News:A historic bungalow in the heart of the capital's Lutyens Bungalow Zone (LBZ) has been sold in what is being described as the most expensive residential property deal in India to date. The iconic property at 17 Motilal Nehru Marg — formerly York Road — was the first official residence of India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Spread over 14,973 square metres (approximately 3.7 acres), the bungalow has now been sold for a staggering ₹1,100 crore, The Economic Times reported. The seller had initially sought ₹1,400 crore, but the deal was closed at a lower price by a prominent industrialist from India's beverage sector.

Who owns the bungalow?

The current owners of the property are Rajkumari Kakkar and Bina Rani, both members of a royal family from Rajasthan. A well-known law firm has issued a public notice regarding the transaction, stating:

"Our clients are interested in purchasing this property (Plot No. 5, Block No. 14, 17 Motilal Nehru Marg). The current owners are Rajkumari Kakkar and Bina Rani. If anyone else has a claim or right over this property, they must inform us with valid documentation within seven days, or it will be presumed that no such claim exists."

A year in the making

Negotiations for the sale had been ongoing for over a year. A real estate expert familiar with the deal commented,

"This is an incredibly valuable piece of land due to its size, location, and VVIP status. But given the price tag, only a handful of billionaires in the country could realistically consider purchasing it."

About the Lutyens Bungalow Zone

The LBZ, designed by British architect Edwin Lutyens between 1912 and 1930, spans approximately 28 square kilometres. It includes about 3,000 bungalows, most of which house top government officials, ministers, and judges. However, there are also around 600 privately-owned properties, held by some of India's wealthiest families and business tycoons.

With the completion of this landmark deal, 17 Motilal Nehru Marg is now officially India's most expensive residential property sale, setting a new benchmark in the luxury real estate market.
