The controversy pertains to 599 acres of land in a plantation in the Peenya Jalahalli region, which was declared a forest in 1896 and later transferred to HMT. Large portions of this land have allegedly been used for real estate projects, leading to a dispute between the state forest department and the Union heavy industries ministry.
Eshwar Khandre is the Forest and Environment Minister of Karnataka. He has recommended legal and disciplinary action against two serving IFS officers, one retired IFS officer, and one retired IAS official for their role in facilitating the handover of HMT forest land to private entities.
IFS officer R Gokul, a whistleblower in the illegal mining scam, has been accused by the state government of being involved in the filing of an application in the Supreme Court to denotify the HMT forest land. He has also written to the CBI alleging that he is being targeted by the Congress government.
The Karnataka government has issued notices to the concerned forest officials, recommended action against them, and ordered the forest department to take possession of 281 acres of vacant land. The state has also withdrawn the June 2020 affidavit filed in the Supreme Court and initiated measures to recover the land.
H D Kumaraswamy, the Union Heavy Industries Minister, has stated that there is no question of returning the land to the forest department. He has questioned the state government's intentions and pointed out that the land was sold during the Congress tenure in the state.
