Leena Gandhi Tewari Sets Real Estate Record, Buys Worli Duplex for ₹639 Crore
Real Estate:India's real estate market is witnessing a significant boom, and a recent high-profile transaction underscores this trend. In a record-breaking deal, Leena Gandhi Tewari, Chairperson of pharma major USV Pvt Ltd, has purchased two ultra-luxurious sea-facing duplex apartments in Mumbai's upscale Worli area for a staggering ₹639 crore. Including stamp duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST), the total transaction, registered on Wednesday, amounts to approximately ₹703 crore, as first reported by The Economic Times. This makes the property deal the most expensive residential property sale ever recorded in India.

These duplex apartments span the 32nd to 35th floors of Naman Xana, a 44-storey luxury high-rise by Shree Naman Group, located just 150 meters above Worli Seaface. Designed by Talaty & Partners LLP, the building offers 22 exclusive residences with column-free 6,500 sq. ft. layouts that provide unique views of the sea and city. Tewari’s two units collectively cover 22,572 sq. ft., valuing the deal at ₹2.83 lakh per sq. ft., making it a rarity even in Mumbai's elite property market.

Apart from the scale of the transaction, Leena Gandhi Tewari's name has also drawn attention. With a net worth exceeding $3 billion, she is one of India’s wealthiest women and heads the privately held pharmaceutical and biotechnology giant USV Pvt Ltd. The company, founded in 1961 by her grandfather Vithal Balkrishna Gandhi, is a market leader in India's oral anti-diabetic and cardiovascular drugs segment. Tewari holds a B.Com. degree from the University of Bombay and an MBA from Boston University.

Her husband, Prashant Tewari, currently serves as the Managing Director of USV, while their daughter Aneesha (Ph.D. in molecular biology from MIT) and son Vilas (a computer science graduate from Boston University) serve on the company's board. Moreover, Tewari joins a list of elite buyers at Naman Xana. According to Moneycontrol, Tanya Dubash, the daughter of Godrej Industries Chairman Adi Godrej, also bought a ₹225-crore duplex in the same tower.

Mumbai continues to dominate the luxury real estate segment in India. Earlier this year, billionaire banker Uday Kotak and family reportedly purchased a Worli property for over ₹400 crore. In 2024, industrialist Yohan Poonawalla and his wife Michelle made headlines with a reported ₹500 crore mansion purchase. In March 2025, SR Menon Properties LLP acquired a ₹187.47 crore apartment in Lodha Sea Face, another luxury project by Macrotech Developers Ltd. in Worli. These high-value transactions highlight the consistent demand for premium real estate in India's prime urban locales.

As India sees exponential growth in the real estate sector, Worli has emerged as a powerhouse in Mumbai's high-end residential market. In 2024 alone, the locality recorded 683 residential registrations across both primary and secondary markets, totaling a transaction value of ₹7,326 crore. As of December 2024, the average property price stood at ₹84,754 per sq. ft. Known for its sea-facing towers, premium retail, and superior connectivity via the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and Eastern Express Highway, Worli continues to attract high-net-worth individuals (HNIs), celebrities, expatriates, and senior corporate professionals seeking luxury, convenience, and long-term value.
